Gulf Islands National Seashore to Waive Entrance Fees

for Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Weekend

In honor of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Gulf Islands National Seashore will join national parks across the country by celebrating with a fee free weekend. The fee free period will be from January 14 through January 16, 2012.All visitors who arrive on those days will be allowed to enter the Fort Pickens and Perdido Key Areas of the Seashore free of charge.

Park visitors are reminded that the fee-free designation applies to entrance fees only and does not affect fees for camping or reservations. Park entrance stations will have Interagency Annual, Interagency Senior and Gulf Islands National Seashore Annual Passes available for those who wish to purchase them.

Superintendent Dan Brown encourages visitors and residents to come explore and enjoy the beautiful beaches, museums, programs, historic forts and recreational opportunities the Seashore has to offer. Camping is available at the Fort Pickens area of the Seashore. All sites are $20 per night with water, electricity, grills/fire rings, and picnic tables.Reservations can be made by calling Recreation.Gov at 877-444-6777, or through the website at Walk-ins are also welcome on a space available basis.

Additional fee free days in 2012 previously announced by the National Park Service include: April 21 - 29 (National Parks Week), June 9 (Get Outdoors Day), September 29 (National Public Lands Day) and November 10 - 12 (Veterans Day weekend.)
