Gulf Islands National Seashore Offers Free Admission this Saturday, September 29, 2012 in Celebration of National Public Lands Day
Gulf Breeze, FL: In celebration of National Park Public Lands Day (NPLD), Gulf Islands National Seashore will join all national parks in offering free admission on Saturday, September 29, 2012.The 19th annual event encourages everyone to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors.NPLD is also a day when Americans give back to our public lands through volunteering to clean up, maintain, beautify or to otherwise support our great public lands.
"Outdoor physical activity is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and Gulf Islands National Seashore is a great place to get out and enjoy the beautiful beaches.You can experience the history of the area by taking a tour of one of our forts located at Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island, Fort Barrancas within the Pensacola Naval Air Station or Fort Massachusetts located on West Ship Island in the Mississippi District of the Seashore," said Superintendent Dan Brown.
Camping is available at the Fort Pickens and Davis Bayou Areas of the Seashore. All sites are $20 per night with water and electrical hookups, grills/fire rings, and picnic tables. Reservations for the Fort Pickens campground can be made up to six months in advance by calling Recreation.Gov at 877-444-6777 or visiting their website at www.recreation.gov.Walk-ins will be accepted on a space available basis.The Davis Bayou campground located in Ocean Springs, Mississippi does not accept reservations and sites are available on a first come first served basis.
If you are planning a trip that includes multiple national parks, you might consider the $80 annual pass that provides entrance to all national parks, national wildlife refuges, national forests, and many other Federal lands - more than 2,000 in all. This America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass is offered free to all active duty military members and their dependents. Gulf Islands National Seashore also offers an annual park pass for $25. Information on these and other pass options is available online at www.nps.gov/guis.
