Clingmans Dome Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be closed to visitor use starting at 7 p.m. on April 23 to 5 p.m. on April 24. The Clingmans Dome Road is a 7 mile spur road off of Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441).
As part of the 75th Anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a Governors’ Proclamation Ceremony commemorating the creation of the Park will be held in the Clingmans Dome parking area which necessitates the closure of the road. Over 200 invited representatives of the park’s neighboring city and county elected officials, tourism representatives and state officials of North Carolina and Tennessee are expected to attend. The purpose of the event is to recognize the important role that local citizens and community leaders, state legislators, and governors played in establishing this national park.
The road closure will affect access to the Clingmans Dome observation tower and several trailheads located along this route during this period.
