Medano Creek flows along the east and south side the main dunefield for part of the year. Although the creek acts as a boundary to sand movement, some sand makes it across the creek during dry spells and during high winds. The sand that makes it across the creek may accumulate into parabolic dunes. These dunes have been nicknamed the Escape Dunes.
