Physical/Mobility Accessibility

Asphalt path with 2 accessible parking spaces, building on front right with a door on each side to access restrooms. Back left is visitor center building with a cement path connecting all things.
When you arrive at the main parking area, the restroom building is closest and on the right and the Visitor Center is the building a little further down the path. This is the best place to start any visit and the Ranger inside will be happy to help you get the most out of your time at the ranch.

Parking

Two accessible parking spaces are located in the Visitor Center parking lot. A 0.25 mile paved, mostly level pathway takes you from this location to the historic ranch area. For visitors needing to park closer to the historic ranch, accessible parking is available. Stop at the visitor center to get directions.

Restrooms

Restrooms with accessible stalls are located in the Visitor Center parking lot and the Garage/Blacksmith Shop. These restrooms do not have automatic opening doors.

Visitor Center

Ramps provide access to the Visitor Center porch and doorways. The doors are not operable by buttons. Exhibits, a bookstore, and information desk are located inside.

Walkways

The pathway from the Visitor Center to the historic ranch is paved and wheelchair accessible. It is mostly level, with a slight rise as it approaches the main ranch house. Benches are available along this path.

Beyond the Ranch House, all walking paths are dirt or loose gravel with uneven surfaces. The walking paths are level along Bunkhouse Row and the Dairy Barn but drop downhill as they approach the back of the ranch house. The ground behind the ranch house is level. Walking paths from this location are dirt, gravel, and grass. They are uneven and deeply pitted in areas.

Walking paths around the Warren Barn, on the east side of the railroad tracks, are uneven dirt surfaces. Walking to the Warren Barn from the Ranch House will require crossing two sets of railroad tracks. The ground level rises as it approaches the crossings, and the ground surface is level as it crosses the tracks.

The Nature Trail is a dirt path, with slight rises, uneven surfaces, and sometimes muddy areas.

Historic Buildings

Many of the facilities at Grant-Kohrs Ranch are historic and built before current accessibility standards were set. Visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility devices might need assistance entering some of the buildings. Bunkhouse Row, the Ice House/Tack Room, Draft Horse Barn, Granary, Stallion Barn, and Leeds Lion Barn may require assistance to enter. Entrances have high steps or thresholds with no handrails. They are not wheelchair accessible. These buildings also have high thresholds in interior doorways. The Dairy Barn, Buggy Shed, Thoroughbred Barn, and Garage/Blacksmith Shop are accessible to persons using a mobility device. Ramps are available into the Shop and Dairy Barn with ranger assistance.

Ranch House Tours

Ranch House tours are accessible to persons using wheelchairs or mobility devices. The tour remains on the first floor of the house. A wooden boardwalk, accessed from the front fence gate of the Ranch House, provides wheelchair access to the house entrance. Please be aware that the interior of the house includes narrow halls and doorways, high thresholds, and moving over carpet edges. Benches and seating are not available inside the Ranch House.

Wayside exhibits such as this one are either level to approach or have a landing like this one near the Ranch House.

Ranger Talks

Several ranger talks are accessible to people with physical and mobility disabilities. Please ask for more information about specific programs at the Visitor Center.

Exhibits

Exhibits in the Visitor Center, Buggy Shed, Garage/Blacksmith Shop, Thoroughbred Barn, and wayside exhibits are accessible with level pathways and ramps.

Picnic Areas

Picnic tables with wheelchair access are located at the Visitor Center, behind the Chuck Wagon, and inside the Dairy Barn. Tables at these locations do not have backrests. Picnic benches at the Visitor Center can be converted into benches with back rests. Please ask for ranger assistance.
