Two-Day Workshop during National Park Week on Greenbelt Park’s Connection to Slavery in Prince George’s County
Two Day workshop during National Park Week on Greenbelt Park's Connection to Slavery in Prince George's County Greenbelt, MD- In honor of National Park Week, Greenbelt park will offer a two-day workshop, Thursday April 22 and Friday April 23,2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Day 1 will include classroom lectures at the New Carrollton Library located at 7417 Riverdale Road, New Carrollton, Md. Day 2 will include a bus trip, departing from Greenbelt Park located at 6565 Greenbelt Road, Greenbelt, MD. The workshop is FREE. National Park Week, April 17-25, honors the people and organizations dedicated to accomplishing the Service's mission. National Park Week encourages everyone to enjoy the natural wonders found in National Parks across the country and in greater Washington area. The workshop is designed for educators, historians, researchers, residences, business owners, and community leaders who teach or want to learn more about African American History. The group will focus on Greenbelt Park's coonection to Prince George's County , Maryland's rich and broad association to the enslavement of African Americans. The curriculum will include classroom lectures on Maryland's Antebellum Slavery, the Underground Railroad in Maryland, the Civil War, the Anacostia River's use in Historic Trade and Commerce, and the Changing Trends in Maryland Research Facilities. Slavery in Prince George's County and the distinct untold story about Greenbelt Park and its greater community will be presented by leading local historians and academicans. The bus trip will include a tour of selected historic sites found in communities surrounding Greenbelt Park. The bus tour is limited to the first 23 people to reserve a space.
