Why should we bring our own campfire wood?

The supply of driftwood has become limited because Glen Canyon Dam holds it back.

  • Starting in 2010 the driftwood collection season has been shortened to Nov. 1 – Feb. 28.
  • Collecting dead and down wood is prohibited.

Why is the collection season shorter?

  • Since the supply of driftwood has become limited, the collection season has been shortened to those months when boaters need it most.
  • You may still have a campfire outside of the collection season if you bring campfire wood from home.

Why is collecting dead and down wood prohibited?

  • Dead and down wood eventually breaks down into soil and provides habitat for wildlife.
  • Sometimes plants look dead but they are alive.
