Commemorate the island’s history as a key U.S. Army base from 1794 to 1966 by participating in family friendly activities which will include living history demonstrations, music, West Point Army mules, and special lectures.

Fiona Templeton and the Relationship Dance Company presents The Medead at Fort Jay - June 28,29

The Medead is a performance in six parts following the chronology of the journey of Medea, and moving from an eastern myth through its changes in the west.

The free program will begin at Fort Jay at 2:30 PM.

The National Park Service, 119th New York Volunteers, The GawdAwful Mess and Battery G of the First Pennsylvania Light Artillery will provide family friendly activities, living history demonstrations, music and other programs designed to introduce you to the men and women of the Governors Island Garrison and Confederates imprisoned on the island.

Remembering the Lessons from the Battle of Brooklyn on Governors Island - August 23,24

Join the National Park Service for family-friendly programs geared to commemorate the pivotal role played by those on Governors Island and the lessons learned from the largest battle of the American Revolution.

The weekend’s programming is designed to trace the evolution of the Coastal Defenses and military community of Governors Island that resulted from the Battle of Brooklyn.

Take in the views of New York Harbor as you participate in a walking tour that highlights the events that led up to the Battle of Brooklyn. 

Meet a Revolutionary War soldier and view historic weapons firing.

Attend lectures that explore the evolution of the New York waterfront and the historic defenses that protected the City of New York.

Programs begin at 10:30 AM.
