National Park Rangers provide guided walking tours during the summer season.

If you are planning to visit on a Wednesday or Thursday with a group of 10 or more, you will need to make a reservation by calling the park at 212-825-3045.

  • Reservations will be taken for the National Historic Landmark District Walking Tours on Wednesdays and Thursdays only and are based on staff availability.
  • Available times are 10 AM or 1 PM.
  • A reservation will ensure that free tickets will be available for your group. We cannot provide private group tours at this time.
  • You can make a reservation for groups less than 30 people based upon available space. Groups may be divided.
  • We will give tours rain or shine, but will cancel programs when dangerous lightning is present or when weather conditions prevent the Governors Island Ferry from operating. We will make every effort to re-schedule, but we cannot guarantee make-up dates.
  • After a reservation is scheduled, we will mail or FAX written confirmation to the group leader who will sign the form and send it back to the park.
  • The reservation is finalized when the signed form is received by the park.
  • Written confirmation letters will be sent out in April.
  • If you need to cancel, please contact the park two days before your scheduled tour.

Safety:

On-island transportation is not available on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Walking tours will last about 1.5 hours and will cover 1.5 miles. The tour route may be strenuous.

Services and facilities are extremely limited and since food service is not available on these days, we recommend that each member of the group bring at least one quart (about 1 Liter) of water and a portable snack.

If you have concerns, please contact the park at 212-825-3045.

School Groups:

We encourage all school and day camp groups to visit the island on Fridays when opportunities for shorter programs and picnicking is available.  Reservations are not needed Friday - Sunday.

If you have any questions, please contact the park at 212-825-3045.

Other Information:

  • Must stay with group at all times and return on the ferry following the tour.
  • You will be able to explore the National Historic Landmark District on your own Friday - Sunday (no reservations needed).

Drawing of Continental Navy Jack flag

Did You Know?
The Continental Navy Jack, designed for Commodore Esek Hopkins during the American Revolution, is still in use today. The Secretary of the Navy reauthorized its use on all Navy ships in 2002. The flag is 13 alternating red and white strips with “Don’t Tread On Me” snake.
