  • Governors Island closed July 4th

    The island will be closed on July 4th and no National Park Service tours or programs will take place that day. NPS weekday ranger tours and programs will still be offered on Wednesday, July 3rd and Friday July 5th.

Bicycling Information


Getting around:

Governors Island is a walking or cycling island. Cars, motorcycles, and other motorized vehicles are not permitted. Exception: Motorized wheelchairs, etc. If you have any questions, please contact 212-440-2200 for more information.

Bike Rentals:
Cycling is a great way to see the island and if you own a bicycle, you are encouraged to bring it with you. You can also rent one on the island. Our partners, The Trust for Governors Island, have contracted with the company Bike and Roll to provide bike rentals on-island, including the "Free Bike Fridays" program.

Cycling is permitted all over the island except in designated areas. Please dismount and walk your bicycle in the following locations:

  • Soissons Dock
  • Fort Jay
  • Castle Williams
  • Nolan Park

The first, last, and only shots fired in anger from Governors Island were directed at British naval ships as they invaded New York Harbor in the summer of 1776.
