Governors Island Draft General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement

The public comment period for the Draft General Management Plan (GMP) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Governors Island National Monument ended on March 18, 2008. An informational open house, attended by nearly 70 people was held at Federal Hall National Memorial at 26 Wall Street, in the afternoon and evening of February 27, 2008. A public hearing that attracted over 100 people was also held at Federal Hall on March 10, 2008.

Over the next few months, park planners will review and evaluate public comments about the Draft GMP/EIS which described and analyzed four alternatives to guide the management of the national monument and the historic fortifications of Fort Jay and Castle Williams for the next 15 to 20 years.

The 310 page draft plan is still available electronically online at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/gois as well in Adobe Acrobat format on a CD which can be requested by contacting the park at 212-825- 3041.
