Biography: Brian O'Neill

Mr. O’Neill works for the National Park Service in the position of Superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area encompasses 76,000 acres of land within Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties.It is the most visited unit of the National Park System in America receiving over 20 million visitors annually and is one of the largest national park areas adjacent to any major city in the world.

 

As Superintendent, Mr. O’Neill oversees an annual operating budget of $25 million, a staff of 425 employees, a volunteer force of over 15,000 and over 30 major facility and program partners.Mr. O’Neill also provides direction and management of a large resource and visitor facility improvement program at Golden Gate, estimated to be $250 million over the next few years. In his capacity as Superintendent, Mr. O’Neill has been a prominent figure over the past several years in the transitioning of the Presidio of San Francisco from a military installation to national park. The Presidio is a unit within the Golden Gate National Recreation area.

 

In addition to his regular job, Mr. O’Neill is involved with a number of other projects within the Bay Area. These include serving as:

 

  • Member of the Board of Directors, Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, a broad-based coalition of agencies, organizations and individuals working to establish the Bay Area Ridge Trail, a 400-mile trail encircling San Francisco Bay
  • Member of the Bay Area Open Space Council, a group of professional land managers working to achieve regional coordination on Bay Area parks, open space and land use issues;
  • Member of the Board of Directors, Association for the Central California Biosphere Reserve, an organization that coordinates work and develops financial support for the 14 member organizations of the biosphere reserve
  • Member of Board of Directors, San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, a prominent public policy think tank located in San Francisco
  • Member of the Board of Directors, Headlands Institute, a premier environmental education provider
  • Member of Board of Directors, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s California Advisory Council
  • Member of the Board of Directors, Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council
  • Member, Save-the-Bay Association Advisory Council
  • Member of Lambda Alpha, a land economics society.

2005—Silver Cable Car Award from San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau—for outstanding contribution to the San Francisco visitor industry

 

2004—Pugsley Medal from the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administration—most prestigious award given nationally to an individual in the park, recreation and conservation field.

 

2004—Presidential Rank Award—highest performance honor awarded to a Federal civilian employee.

 

2004—Department of the Interior Take Pride in America National Federal Land Managers Award for outstanding commitment to the stewardship of America’s Public Lands.

 

2004—Two Secretary of the Interior Special Awards for co-chairmanship of the Joint Ventures: Partners in Stewardship Conference and role in co-chairing the Department of the Interior’s Partnership and Collaboration Action Team.

 

2003—Gold performance award—highest performance recognition given to a Department of the Interior senior executive

 

2002—San Francisco Bay Area “Conservationist of the Year” granted by the Bay Area Open Space Council.

 

2002—Cultural Resource Stewardship Park Superintendent of the year award granted by the National Park Service

 

2002—Department of the Interior Meritorious Service Award for outstanding accomplishments in creating and using innovative partnerships

 

1997—American Recreation Coalition’s “Legends” award for sustained national leadership in the park and recreation field

 

1996—Marin County “Conservationist of the Year” award granted by the Marin Conservation League.

 

1995—American Hiking Society’s annual Glenn T. Seaberg Legends Award for work in advancing national trail efforts

 

Mr. O’Neill is married to Marti and has two adult children, Kim and Brent.
