(San Francisco, CA)—Conzelman Road, between McCullough and Field Roads, will reopen to all traffic with weekday delays, starting Saturday, November 6, as the first season of the four-year construction project winds down. The road and trail delays will be Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

November 20, a bicycle ride and information fair has been organized to celebrate the completion of all roadwork on this project for the season, and the delays being lifted. The ride will start promptly at 9 a.m. from the Northwest Bridge parking lot (formerly known as the Dillingham parking lot). The route will pass Hawk Hill where the information fair will be from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Riders can make their way back to the parking lot down the one-way portion of Conzelman Road and through the tunnel, or over McCullough Road.

Though the construction improved the road in many ways this is still a difficult ride and should not be attempted by novices. After the bicycles have a head-start vehicles will be welcome to follow them to the top of the hill and complete the loop. Project team members will be available at the fair to answer questions about the upcoming construction and improvements in the Headlands, expected through 2014.

The Conzelman Road reconstruction is part of one of the most significant highway improvements in the history of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and is part of the comprehensive Marin Headlands and Fort Baker Transportation Infrastructure and Management Plan. This multi-phase project will improve access and safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians on 11-miles of historic roads and trails.

“The contractor has completed the majority of the work planned for this season,” said Rick Suarez, the Division Engineer for Federal Highway Administration’s Central Federal Lands. “Minor work will continue until mid-November, but the project team thought it was important that the roadway be reopened as soon as it was safe for public access so users can enjoy the improvements. We expect some travel delays up to 15 minutes along this route until all work is completed for the season.”

Frank Dean, Superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, stated “The National Park Service is pleased to share the improvements with visitors and appreciate the patience that users have shown during the roadway closures this season.” East Road at Fort Baker, McCullough Road, and the portion of Conzelman Road between McCullough Road and Lower Fisherman Parking area, including Hawk Hill were completed during this first phase of the project.

Construction will shut down this winter due to weather restrictions, but will resume in February 2011 with the reconstruction of the Northwest Bridge Parking lot and extension of the right turn lane on Bunker Road near the Baker-Barry Tunnel. Next season improvements will also be made to Field Road and the portion of Conzelman Road from Alexander Avenue to McCullough Road. Information on the construction schedule and regular project updates will be posted on the project website at www.projectheadlands.gov and you can sign up for regular email updates.
