Are you a student seeking an internship for academic credit? Are you looking for something to do in your spare time? Are you a community service group or organization looking for a way to give back to the community? Are you in need of community service hours? There are many volunteer opportunities at Glen Echo Park.

Volunteers perform a variety of duties including visitor services/interpretation, grounds and facilities improvement and maintenance, historical research, oral history interviews, and tasks associated with special events. Most volunteers live in the local area and schedules are flexible depending on site needs.

The following individual opportunities that are currently available.

Job Title: Interpretation and Visitor Services Student Intern

We are seeking a student intern for the Summer 2013 semester for the Interpretation and Visitor Services division at both Glen Echo Park and the Clara Barton National Historic Site (located next door).

While we are currently looking for a specific semester, positions are available on an ongoing basis. Student interns will be accepted on a semester by semester basis with the option of multiple consecutive semesters.

Course credit for this internship may be available by arrangement through your adademic advisor.

Expected Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Will be cross-trained to work at both Glen Echo Park and Clara Barton National Historic Site (NHS)
  • Provide interpretation, visitor services, and tours to the general public and specialized groups in informal and formal settings
  • Research, develop, and conduct interpretive programming such as a Clara Barton NHS house tour, a Glen Echo Park walking tour, and a Dentzel Carousel tour
  • Perform roving assignments addressing park resources, recreational opportunities, stewardship, park policies, and visitor safety

Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Basic computer skills
  • Must be able to work weekends and commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week (more hours are welcome and available but not required)
  • Have independent transportation (public transportation to Glen Echo Park and Clara Barton NHS is limited)
  • Preferred: background in history, sociology, anthropology, historic preservation, public history or similar disciplines
