New Safety Measures in "Permit Parking Only" Lot at Glen Echo Park

The National Park Service is implementing a number of measures to improve safety of the small "permit parking only" lot at 7300 MacArthur Blvd. Speed bumps have been added to the lot and the direction of traffic is being changed to "one way" around the lot. This will improve the safety of all who use the parking lot.

An electronic message board will be in place for approximately two weeks to inform park visitors of the new traffic pattern. This small parking lot is "permit parking only" from 8am to 4pm daily.  A large parking lot located on Oxford Road is open for parking (no permits needed) when Glen Echo Park is open (6am--1am).

New Visitor Information Signs Installed at Clara Barton NHS & Glen Echo Park

The National Park Service is installing new visitor information signs at Clara Barton National Historic Site and Glen Echo Park. The work will take place over the next two weeks. These signs will help visitors locate the different classes, programs, and historic structures in both areas and provide brief information as to each site's historic significance. For further information please contact Polly Angelakis, Site Manager, Clara Barton NHS & Glen Echo Park (301-320-1400).

Learn about the Future of the National Park Service

Centennial Vision

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016, America invites the world to discover the meaning of national parks to their lives and inspires people to both experience and become devoted to these special places.

On August 25, 2006 – the 90th anniversary of the National Park Service – Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne launched the National Park Centennial Initiative to prepare national parks for another century of conservation, preservation and enjoyment. Since then the National Park Service asked citizens, park partners, experts and other stakeholders what they envisioned for a second century of national parks.

A nationwide series of more than 40 listening sessions produced more than 6,000 comments that helped to shape five centennial goals. The goals and vision were presented to President Bush and to the American people on May 31st in a report called The Future of America's National Parks.

Every national park staff took their lead from this report and created local centennial strategies to describe their vision and desired accomplishments by 2016.
