Staff at Rainbow Bridge National Monument today announced that the full schedule of events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the monument has been posted to the park’s website. The first event will be held this Friday, March 12, at 7 p.m. at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center in Page, Arizona. Long-time trader and Page resident Elijah Blair will share stories about his life as a trader and an early explorer of canyon country. "There are so many stories from so many perspectives surrounding Rainbow Bridge," Max King, Chief of Interpretation, said. "We are going to try and uncover as many of them as possible through guest lectures, workshops, and other public events." Rainbow Bridge was declared a national monument by President William H. Taft on May 30, 1910. The National Park Service is organizing a series of events over the next three months leading up to the 100th anniversary commemoration on May 30, 2010. Upcoming events include guided tours of the Rainbow Bridge and Glen Canyon archives on March 18, a presentation on the history of Rainbow Bridge by Park Ranger Chuck Smith on March 19, and a guest lecture by Navajo National Monument Ranger Curlinda Holiday on March 26. Many more events have been planned. Events are open to the public, although some guided tours and workshops will require reservations.
