Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Announces Artist–in-Park Program
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument launched an exciting new program this month when local artist Suzanne Schmaltz was selected to become the first ever Artist-in-Park.
Schmaltz has been surrounded by art her entire life, including formal training in ceramics, wood and metal-work. She is self-taught in basket weaving and beading and her current body of work is a result of her life-long participation in various mediums.
The expanse and remoteness of her physical surroundings interject themselves into her work and being surrounded by the beauty of this area re-energizes Suzanne on a daily basis. She said, "I am constantly inspired by the complex simplicity of nature - its colors, its textures, the flow of its lines, the hard edges of its geometry. Observe nature from a distance and it looks effortless and simplistic, but look closer and it is a marvel to behold how intricate each and every component is. The depth of its complexity is staggering and inspiring."
Selected artists are required to spend at least 20 hours working in the park and to give at least one public presentation. For a schedule of where Suzanne will be, check our calendar of events.
National parks have always welcomed artistic interpretations in support of land advocacy. Thomas Moran's evocative and astounding paintings directly influenced the establishment of Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872. The tradition continues today with more than 40 Artist-in-Park programs established throughout the National Park Service.
