The Alaska Local Hire program provides job opportunities for eligible, qualified residents living near Glacier Bay National Park.
WHO MAY APPLY: Under the Alaska Local Hire Program which was established in Section 1308 of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980 (ANILCA) (Public Law 96-487), any individual who, by reason of having either lived or worked in or near Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, has special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural and/or cultural resources of the park and its management. Congressional intent of the Act is to provide opportunities to hire local residents who possess special knowledge/expertise about the resources of public lands. Applicants must have lived or worked as a fulltime resident in the local hire geographic area for a long enough period of time to have acquired the special natural and/or cultural knowledge required by the position and for a minimum period of time long enough to have encompassed the full range of climatic conditions and seasons to at least include all twelve months, not necessarily consecutively, of the calendar year. Strictly seasonal experience is not considered sufficient time to have obtained adequate special knowledge or expertise to qualify under the local hire authority. The local hire geographic area has generally been defined as including, but not limited to, the communities of Dry Bay, Elfin Cove, Gustavus, Haines, Hoonah, Juneau-Douglas, Pelican, Skagway, and Yakutat. Eligibility must be met by the closing date of each announcement.
