Humpback Whales feeding in Sitakaday Narrows

This is the narrow opening to Glacier Bay, where it opens up to bigger waters close to the Gulf of Alaska and the open ocean. Four times a day the tides shift and water level in the bay drops or rises as much as 24 feet! That creates fast moving and turbulent water. The humpback whale thrives here where it can feed upon millions of tiny fish and shrimp-like critters called krill. Glacier Bay is full of wildlife and not just in the water. Keep an eye of for animals on shore too. Sometimes bears can be seen along some of the beaches. At your next stop we will see the hairiest creatures on the planet. Did You Know?
Common Murres (often seen on or near the Marble Islands) have a unique nesting behavior. They lay a single egg on bare ground or rock ledges. The egg is pear-shaped which prevents it from rolling off the ledge. Each egg has unique speckles and coloration that helps the parents identify their egg.
