Contact: Melissa Wilson, 406-888-7895 Contact: Laura Law, 406-888-5837 WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Officials from Glacier National Park invite 3rd -10th grade teachers and other resource educators to a free workshop at park headquarters on June 22, 2006, from 9 – 4:30. Workshop participants will explore the popular U.S. Forest Service “FireWorks” fire education curriculum and hike the Rocky Point Trail, an area that burned in the 2003 Robert Fire. Education and natural resource specialists from Glacier National Park and Flathead National Forest will be available at the workshop to guide participants through the many curriculum activities and to lead the walk along the Rocky Point Trail. All workshop participants will receive a free copy of the “FireWorks” curriculum on CD. The “FireWorks” educational trunk consists of curriculum, laboratory materials, specimens, and reference materials. It provides interactive, hands-on activities for studying fire ecology, fire behavior, and the influences of people on three fire-dependent forest types – Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine), Pinus contorta var. latifolia (interior lodgepole pine), and Pinus albicaulis (whitebark pine). Two trunks are available for teachers and others to check out and use through Glacier National Park and Flathead National Forest. There will also be a presentation of the new, two-DVD set “Fire on the Land: an Interactive Educational DVD” on the traditional and contemporary use of fire by the Salish and Pend d’Oreille Tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation. The “Fire on the Land” DVD is part of a larger fire-education project entitled “Native People and Fire in the Northern Rockies” produced by the Tribes and funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs–National Interagency Fire Center. The project won the 2005 National Fire Plan Award for Excellence in Community Assistance.
