WEST GLACIER, MONT.– Officials at Glacier National Park welcome Myra Messick Simons and Helene Fischman for the 2011 Artist-in-Residence Program. These artists were selected to work with the park’s interpretation and education staff to develop artwork to be used in park exhibits and programs. Myra Messick Simons has a Fine Arts degree with a minor in biology from the University of Cincinnati. She has done exhibit and design work for numerous museums including: the Museum Center of Cincinnati; the Dayton Museum of Natural History; the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Colorado Springs, CO; and the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Simons will be working with Glacier’s Interpretive staff to create artwork for a set of new exhibits to be placed on the short paved loop behind the Logan Pass Visitor Center. The exhibits will focus on wildlife adaptations to survive in the alpine environment. Simons will reside in Glacier from June 13 to July 10. Helene Fischman is a professional artist and teacher with an undergraduate degree from Boston University School of Visual Arts and a master’s degree from California State University, Hayward. Fischman has been an artist-in-residence at various National Parks in the United States as well as in Eastern Europe. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in many private collections including the Auschwitz Jewish Center in Poland. Fischman will be leading a photography and poetry writing hike/workshop for children in Glacier National Park at the end of July. During this hike participants will capture the beauty of the landscape while also learning some simple poetry techniques to express this beauty in words as well as images. Fischman will be in the park from July 25 to August 7.
