WEST GLACIER, MONT. Rain and snow over the region put a halt on Going-to-the-Sun Road (Sun Road) reconstruction during the week of April 26-30. In an effort to stay on schedule, HK Contractors, Inc. will work on the west side of the Going-to-the-Sun Road the weekend of May 8-9, weather permitting. That means there will be a restriction on hiking and bicycling beyond the Logan Creek area, about three miles past the Avalanche Campground area.

Glacier National Park officials recognize this may be an inconvenience to some people because Mothers Day is a popular time for activities in the park. Officials remind visitors that more than 20 miles of the Sun Road and a number of other park roads are open, weather permitting. Apgar campground opens this Friday May 7, as do a number of privately owned businesses in Apgar Village and in gateway communities.

On the Sun Road, visitors can drive 16 miles from the West Entrance to Avalanche, and six miles from the St. Mary Entrance to Rising Sun. Many Glacier Road, Two Medicine Road, Camas Road, and the Quarter Circle Bridge Road are currently all open for vehicle traffic. Kintla Road is open from Polebridge to Big Prairie. Vehicles can access the Rocky Point trailhead on the Inside North Fork Road, but the road is closed to vehicles from the Fish Creek gate to Polebridge. All other park roads remain closed to motorized vehicles due to snow and ice.

Glacier National Park remains open year round for various recreational opportunities and campgrounds and concessions will start opening in the upcoming weeks. Schedules are available on Glaciers website under News Releases: https://www.nps.gov/glac/parknews/newsreleases.htm.

Beginning May 1, the Apgar Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for information and backcountry permits. Visitors can also stop at park headquarters in West Glacier for information Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. General park information is also available by phone at 406-888-7800, including the specific location of hiker/bicycle closures.
