WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Trees and vegetation encroaching on the Going-to-the-Sun Road (Sun Road) corridor and limiting driver’s visibility are being trimmed this fall.  The project is currently underway on the park’s west side between Apgar and the Loop, and will include the east side of Sun Road from St. Mary to Siyeh Bend.

Brushing will also be done on the Camas Road in coming weeks.

It has been several years since brushing has taken place on the Sun Road, causing very limited visibility for drivers in some areas. The work is being performed by Mountain View Company from Missoula.  The contractor will use both tractor mounted equipment and hand crews to cut back vegetation about 15 feet on each side of the road.  They have several years of experience doing roadside brushing.  The company makes an initial pass with heavy equipment leaving a rough look, which hand crews then finish.  The brush is then chipped and recycled into the forest surroundings.

Drivers should maintain a safe distance behind brushing equipment, as wood chips and sticks can become airborne during the trimming the process.  Hikers and bicyclists also need to keep as far back from the brushing equipment as possible while traveling on sections of the Sun Road that are currently closed to vehicles.

The project should be complete by early December 2009.
