WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Glacier National Park will celebrate National Public Lands Day by waiving entrance fees for all visitors, and providing volunteer opportunities in the park.  Park personnel will maintain trails, remove noxious weeds, pick up litter, and paint buildings along with area residents who will join the largest annual coast-to-coast, single-day volunteer effort to improve America’s public lands.

Local volunteers are invited to roll up their sleeves to help with these projects at Glacier National Park as part of the 16th annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) on Saturday, September 26, 2009.  All entrance fees into the park, including those for commercial tours, will be waived that day. However, other park fees, such as those for frontcountry and backcountry camping, still will be charged.

These national cleanups give Americans a yearly opportunity to make public lands in their communities cleaner, prettier, and safer.“Last year more than 120,000 volunteers came out to help improve their favorite public places at locations all around the country,” said Robb Hampton, director of NPLD. “In 2009 we’re expecting to increase turnout by an additional 10,000, making this year’s event the biggest National Public Lands Day yet.”

At more than 2,000 sites in all 50 states, National Public Lands Day volunteers will clean parks, lakes, streams and beaches, build trails and bridges, remove invasive species and plant native trees and vegetation.  “National Public Lands Day is a great opportunity for people of all ages to get outside, work alongside their neighbors, and help to improve their community,’ said Glacier National Park Superintendent Chas Cartwright. Cartwright added, “I’d encourage everyone with a few free hours to stop by.  This is the second year we’ve hosted a National Public Lands Day event, and we’re excited to build off of last year’s success.”

This year’s Public Lands Day volunteer event will culminate at the West Glacier Community Building at 4 p.m. with a preview of a portion of the forthcoming Ken Burns production, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Light refreshments will also be served.

Volunteers are asked to register by Friday, September 25 by contacting volunteer coordinator Brooke Linford at e-mail us or by calling 406-888-7851.  All volunteers should bring lunch, water, sunscreen and sturdy footwear, and be prepared with adequate clothing for a variety of weather conditions.
