WEST GLACIER, MT – Glacier National Park will present two upcoming teacher workshops, including the Flathead Community of Resource Educators (CORE) Trunk Workshop, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on August 18, 2008, and a “Glacier 101, K-6 Teacher Workshop,” from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on August 21. Both workshops are free and open to formal and non-formal educators. The sessions are part of the Northwest Montana Educational Cooperative’s Summer Institute. At the Flathead CORE Trunk Workshop on August 18, Laura Law, Glacier’s Education Specialist, will present Glacier’s recently updated bear and wolf travelling trunks. The trunks contain DVDs, books, lesson plans, puppets, skins, skulls, and much more. They are free for teachers and other educators in the community to borrow for intervals of two to four weeks and must be picked up at Park headquarters in West Glacier. The trunks got a face-lift this summer thanks to teachers Michelle Petersen and Diane Shanks, who participated in Glacier’s Teacher-to-Ranger-to-Teacher program, and to the Glacier Natural History Association, which funded the purchasing of new materials for the trunks. Other presenters at the Flathead CORE Trunk Workshop will include: Flathead National Forest, the Glacier Institute, and the Montana Northwest Educational Cooperative. In addition, trunks will be on display from Women in Timber, the Swan Ecosystem Center, Flathead Audubon, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, the Hockaday Museum of Art, and the Flathead Conservation District. The workshop will take place at the Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s Office, 650 Wolfpack Way in Kalispell. At the “Glacier 101, K-6 Teacher Workshop” on August 21, Law will spend more time presenting teachers with information about national parks and the things that make Glacier unique. She will lead teachers through activities they can use in their classrooms and will provide references and resources to learn more about Glacier. Participating teachers will have the opportunity to win posters, games, CDs, puzzles, books, and other materials. This workshop will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Earl Bennett Building, 1035 1st Avenue West in Kalispell. To register for a workshop, contact Law at e-mail us or at 406-888-5837.
