WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Officials at Glacier National Park report that a 425-pound male grizzly bear was released without incident in the park, north of Polebridge, on Monday, April 09, 2007. The six-year-old grizzly had been captured on Sunday morning, April 8, 2007, by Blackfeet wildlife officials near Kiowa for a livestock depredation. This was the bear’s first capture and first known offense. Both grizzly and black bears have been reported this spring. Officials remind visitors to take precautions to avoid a bear encounter by making their presence known by calling out or clapping at frequent intervals, especially near streams and at blind spots on the trails. Additionally, do not approach any wildlife. Visitors are also reminded to keep a clean camp. Park regulations require that all edibles, including pet food, food containers, and cookware be stored inside hard-sided vehicles or in food lockers. Place garbage in bear-resistant containers.
