WEST GLACIER, MONT. – Officials at Glacier National Park report that additional park roads have been opened to vehicular traffic. The Two Medicine Road and the Many Glacier Road were opened to vehicles on Saturday. The gate at Polebridge was opened for the season on Monday to allow motorized vehicle access to the Big Prairie area. This opening allows visitors to travel seven miles. Visitors can hike/bike beyond the gate to Bowman or Kintla Lake. The Apgar Lookout Road and Kelly Camp Road are also now open.

On the Going-to-the-Sun (Sun) Road, the vehicle gates remain at Avalanche and Rising Sun. During plowing, the hiker/biker closures are at Claudes’ Corner, approximately five miles beyond Avalanche, and St. Mary Falls. Hiker/biker closures are only applicable when road crews are plowing; therefore, there are no hiker/biker closures all day Saturday through Monday, and evenings Tuesday through Friday.

Visitors are reminded to be alert for snowplows and other heavy equipment on park roads as well as areas of ice and/or slush, avalanche zones and/or fallen rock. Additionally, spring snowstorms can cause hazardous driving conditions and/or temporary road closures.

Visitors can track plowing progress, through the plowing status Web site at https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/gttsroadplow/gttsroadplowstatus.cfm. Plowing photos are also available online at https://www.nps.gov/glac/gallery/plow2006.htm.

For information on current road conditions, visit the park’s road status Web site https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm. This page is updated as conditions change.

Current road conditions are also available by calling 511, the Montana Department of Transportation Traveler Information System. If your phone does not support 511, call 1-800-226-7623. Both numbers are toll-free. Select “Glacier Park Tourist Information” from the main menu to hear Glacier’s road report.

Travelers may also call park headquarters at 406-888-7800 for current road and weather conditions.
