TITLE: GIS Modeling; Map Analysis and Application Issues for Natural Resources

DESCRIPTION: This intermediate-level workshop presents the basic concepts, procedures and applications of GIS modeling with emphasis in natural resources and environmental management. The concepts presented are reinforced through several practical exercises. The first portion of the workshop establishes the concept of "maps as data" by introducing the fundamentals of spatial statistics, with emphasis on the considerations and issues surrounding interpolation of point data. These discussions are extended to surface modeling and mapped data analysis. The next portion focuses on the analytical capabilities of GIS emphasizing grid-based spatial analysis techniques. The discussion focuses on individual operations, such as shape/pattern indices, effective distance, optimal path connectivity, visual exposure and roving windows that are used in modeling spatial relationships. These discussions are extended to GIS modeling procedures required in constructing sound application models and the future directions of GIS technology.

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Joseph K. Berry, Berry and Associates // Spatial Information Systems
TIME: 8:00 - 5:00
COST: $30
CLASS LIMIT: 30

TITLE: NPS Applications and Data for ArcView GIS; Hands-On.

DESCRIPTION: This training session will cover NPS-developed applications and Inventory and Monitoring natural resource inventory data using ArcView GIS software. Topics that will be covered include the GIS Theme Manager extension for organizing and managing GIS themes and topical exercises that use spatial data for natural resource applications. The Theme Manager also includes tools for viewing metadata, non-tabular reports, and large graphics. The class will also cover an introduction the Database Template project that includes working with and integrating database applications with ArcView GIS. Subject areas for natural resource applications include base cartography, geology, soils, and vegetation data. The goal of this class is to provide an introduction to using available GIS data for resource applications at your site.

INSTRUCTOR: Joe Gregson, Greg Daniels, NPS
TIME: 8:00 - 5:00
COST: $30
CLASS LIMIT: 20

TITLE: Map Design Workshop

DESCRIPTION: This map design workshop will focus on how to design better maps. Attendees will bring in their maps for constructive critique and "make overs". Mr. Carroll will begin the session with a discussion about design theory and related cartographic issues.

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Allen Carroll, Chief Cartographer National Geographic Society
TIME: 8:00am to noon
COST: $15
CLASS LIMIT: 30

TITLE: Migrating AV 3.x to 8.1

DESCRIPTION: Highlights from ESRI's two-day course, this session introduces ArcView GIS 3.x users to the features and architecture of ArcView 8. As a lecture-only class, students will learn how to use the new Windows-based applications - ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox- and explore how they work together. Participants will learn how the ArcView 3.x terminology and features relate to the new terminology and features of ArcView 8. Major differences between ArcView 3.x and ArcView 8.1, migration of projects, data, and symbology will be covered.

INSTRUCTOR: ESRI
TIME: 1:30 to 5:30 pm
COST: $15
CLASS LIMIT: 30

WEDNESDAY

TITLE: Understanding and Using the Geodatabase

DESCRIPTION: This lecture-only workshop covers the basics of the Geodatabase using ArcCatalog and ArcMap. Topics will include importing data into a Geodata base, creating domains, subtypes and simple relationships, and basic geodatabase editing. Basic working knowledge of ArcCatalog and ArcMap required.

INSTRUCTOR: ESRI
TIME: 1:30 - 5:30 pm
COST: $15
CLASS LIMIT: 30

FRIDAY

TITLE: GPS Tools and ArcPad 6.0: The Latest and Greatest; Hands-on

DESCRIPTION: Take a local trip with NPS and ESRI GPS experts. Learn how to use various GPS systems for field data collection and ensure that you are using the right tool for your particular map making job. This training is intended to give the participant a look at several different GPS mapping systems, including Trimble GPS Pathfinder® Pocket; Trimble GeoExplorer 3, Garmin III and Garmin V (WAAS enabled) GPS receivers. Participants will get hands-on experience using these in conjunction with ESRI's ArcPad® 6.0 and Trimble Terrasync®, on the hottest new handheld computing devices such as the IPAQ H3670 Color Pocket PC. Spend a day and learn how these systems can provide real-time data acquisition and in-field attribution for your mapping needs.

INSTRUCTOR: Tim Smith, Kerri Mich, Tom Patterson, Joel Cusick, NPS; Shane Clarke, ESRI
TIME: 8:00 - 5:00
COST: $30
CLASS LIMIT: 30

TITLE: Using ArcView 8.1; Hands-On

DESCRIPTION: This workshop will cover the basics of ArcView 8.1 functionality in a hands-on environment. Topics will include navigating through the ArcMap interface (GUI), integrating various data types, data query and analysis, graph and report creation, and cartography. Exercises provided. Fundamentals of GIS practice required.

INSTRUCTOR: ESRI
TIME: 8:00 - 5:00
COST: $30
CLASS LIMIT: 20

TITLE: Psst.... have I a dat[e]a for you!

DESCRIPTION: Single data: Quality data wants same.

Looking for non-proprietary, young dataset, without baggage: no errors, no omissions, known origins for long-term relationship. Will you make my data complete? Tell me about you: keywords, process steps, taxonomy, projection system, etc. Call: 202-555-3282 (555-DATA).

A blind date with an unknown dataset, have you been there? Unexpected characteristics that just donĘt meld with you. Do you want to investigate the data before meeting? Data history: Is the data still living with its parents? Is there something in the past to make the data undesirable---sampled, handled, measured, analyzed? In a better world, every data would be represented in a forthright manner.

The information metadata revealed about a data set, a metadata tool review and tour, and how one can find that quality dataset in a crowd of those with questionable reputations will be covered in an all day, hands-on workshop. Sharon Shin, USGS- Center for Biological Informatics provides a lively and informative workshop to introduce the basics of metadata: metadata standard content, metadata tools, an introduction to Intergraph's SMMS metadata creation tool, clearinghouse, and a byte on the International Standards. Organization (ISO) metadata standard will be covered. Bring information regarding your data set to input into the software. What information should to bring is described in the linked document- "Bring along to training." Biological Data Profile Workbook, Student Manual, and miscellaneous training incentives are provided to each participant.

INSTRUCTOR: Sharon Shin, USGS- Center for Biological Informatics, April Molina - NPS-ISO Albuquerque
TIME: 8:00 - 5:00
COST: $30 CLASS LIMIT: 20
