Exercise 5: Creating input layers for FARSITE using Spatial Analyst
A park fire ecologist is preparing to run FARSITE (Fire Area Simulator) modeling for an upcoming planning meeting. As input to the model, he needs to create a FARSITE landscape from ArcView using GIS layers for elevation, slope, aspect, fuels and percent canopy cover.
Exercise Objectives:
At the conclusion of this section, you will be able to:
- Describe an elevation grid and its uses.
- Understand the creation and use of FARSITE
- Clip an elevation grid to the extent of your project area.
- Process an elevation grid into slope and aspect using AV Spatial Analyst extension.
- Convert a shapefile to a grid and assign values from the coverage to grid cells.
- Convert a grid to an ASCII text layer.
