Hotlink images to files
Congratulations, you have now completed Exercise 1: Creating Prescribed Burn Area Information For Fire Effects Monitors. Click the next button below, to continue to Exercise 2.
- If you left open ArcView from the previous exercise, skip to step 2. If not, open ArcView and open the project that was saved in the previous step, exercise_1.apr.
- Copy and paste the photographs taken in the field to images folder. If images were not taken in the field, some have been provided in c:\firegis\images\.
- Make the View active and click on the inside_points theme to make it active.
- Click on the Open Theme Table button

- From the Table menu, click on Start Editing.
- From the Edit menu, choose Add Field.
- In the Field Definition dialog box, type Photo in the Name box, set the Type to String, set the width to 40, and click OK.
- Click on the edit tool and type in the path to the images folder and image. An example would be c:\firegis\images\BOWA_plot1.JPG.
- From the Table menu, choose Stop Editing. Make sure to save your edits. Close the attribute table and return to the View.
- Make the Project window active, click on Scripts, and click on the New button.
- Select “Load Text File” from the Script menu. Navigate to the systems scripts that came with ArcView located in \ESRI\AV_GIS30\ARCVIEW\Samples\scripts\. Click on the script lnkimgvw.ave and click OK.
- Select Properties from Script menu. Type Hotlink in the Name field. Click OK once you have entered the new name in.
- Click on the Compile button.
- Close the Script window and open the View .
- From the File menu, choose Extensions and turn the JPEG (JFIF) Image Support Extension on to ensure you can view JPG files.
- Make the inside_points theme active by clicking on it in the table of contents.
- Click on the Theme menu, select Properties, and scroll down on the left to click on the Hot Link icon.
- Set the Field to Photo, Predefined Action to Link to User Script, and navigate to the Hotlink script by clicking on the “hand” icon. Click OK once you are finished entering the information in.
- Click on the hotlink tool on the main toolbar
. Click on any of the points that have an image accompanying it. It may take several clicks of the mouse over the center of the point until the jpg pops up.
