Prior to a prescribed burn, the Fire Effects Monitor establishes monitoring plots inside and outside of the prescribed burn area. In the lab, random plots are placed on a map in pre-selected areas using GIS. The monitor takes the map to the field and navigates with GPS equipment to each of the random plot locations. Fire effects monitoring data, GPS location and digital photos are all part of the data set collected at each site.
