In early November 2006, Mount Rainier National Park suffered from a devastating flood that inflicted a great deal of resource and infrastructural damage. In 2008, SCA completed two years of work at Mount Rainier National Park and played a major role in the recovery of the park. Three main SCA groups in the park assisted with the effort: the Rainier Recovery Corps, Conservation Interns, and the Seattle community-based Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC). Together the three SCA groups brought young women, minority students and young people from all over the country to serve at Mt. Rainier. These groups worked daily to restore the park’s resources through re-vegetation efforts, trail recovery, archaeological surveys, and an array of other conservation projects. In addition, the Recovery Corps’ specific mission was to restore the park, and engage the public to volunteer their time to preserve the natural beauty of the park for years to come. Three of the CLC members recorded (digitally and written) the crew experience and shared it with attendees at SCA’s EarthVision Summit. |
