Girl Scouts learn from a park ranger about trees while on a hike at Colorado National Monument(CO). The Girl Scouts of America is an agency targeted by the National Park Service to help give women exposure to conservation, service projects, career opportunities, outdoor recreation, and resource management skills. The NPS and the Girl Scouts collaborate to provide young women ages 5-17 with exposure to national parks by participating in a number of activities that focus on teaching them about different aspects of the National Park Service. Girl Scout troops often make use of NPS activities by taking part in park interpretive programs and resource protection workshops.
Resource Stewardship Girl Scout Ranger Program
Girl Scout Ranger program engages Girl Scouts in educational, volunteer service, or action projects in national parks. Girl Scouts can earn a certificate or patch for participating in activities.
Linking Girls to the Land
The NPS is involved with other federal agencies in Linking Girls to the Land, an initiative that focuses on trying to involve young women in the protection and maintenance of natural resources, particularly at the local level. Linking Girls to the Land regional workshops take place at parks or other locations where NPS staff present information to scout leaders and parents on the different employment, internship, and volunteer opportunities for young women. |
