EarthVision Summit 2008

In 2007, SCA celebrated its 50th Anniversary and 50 years in partnership with the NPS. The EarthVision Summit held in Washington, D.C. was a celebration of 50 years of service to the environment and the community. Nearly 500 SCA members and alumni from 39 states, Belgium and Puerto Rico came to learn from speakers and each others about climate change, land management issues, and other outdoor related issues.

The attendees completed more than 1,500 hours of conservation service at six park sites in the Washington, D.C area: C&O Canal National Historic Park, Rock Creek National Park, Theodore Roosevelt Island, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Arlington House and Anacostia Park.

Through speakers, forums, volunteer service projects, the Summit strived to:

  • Increase the number of young people interested in public land stewardship.
  • Teach young people from diverse backgrounds the concepts of collaborative conservation and shared stewardship of public    lands.
  • Demonstrate the power of young people to take the lead in conserving America’s natural resources.
  • Expose young people to career and volunteer opportunities within the National Park Service.

The summit proved to be a great outreach mechanism as two-thirds of the attendees were new to SCA and the NPS and received a great introduction to both. 15% of the attendees were minorities, providing a great indication that the conservation movement is making great strides in reaching underrepresented individuals.
