The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most costly in terms of human loss- 51,000 casualties suffered by both armies. The statistics that result from such a desperate battle are even more tragic when we see the faces of the men who paid the price for their respective causes. Gettysburg was more than the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy". It was a turning point for many of the organizations of state volunteer regiments in both armies. Some regiments, such as the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry, were virtually destroyed at Gettysburg, their losses so great that the organization was never able to recover. Some units survived the battle, fully prepared to fight again on some future battlefield. Here are a few of those young Americans who wore the blue and the gray at Gettysburg.
