Community Day Scheduled for February 16—Presidents’ Day

Special presentation will focus on capturing history through sculpture

Gettysburg, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2009)—The Gettysburg Foundation and the National Park Service are pleased to invite Adams County residents to the second of four planned Community Appreciation Days on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009. On designated Community Appreciation Days, Adams County residents enjoy free tickets for the Cyclorama, Film and Museum experience at the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park.

The Museum and Visitor Center will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., with the first Cyclorama and Film show scheduled for 8:15 a.m.; the final show will be at 4:15 p.m. Due to the popularity of previous community events and the busy holiday weekend (featuring the grand opening of the Historic David Wills House), Adams County residents are encouraged to arrive early; crowds are usually lightest between 8:30-10 a.m., and tickets are available on a first-come, first-served, space-available basis. (Advance reservations are not available for Community Appreciation Day tickets, and rain checks will not be available.) Local visitors should be prepared to show proof of residence, such as a driver’s license.

In honor of Presidents’ Day and the Lincoln Bicentennial, the Foundation will also host renowned sculptor Ivan Schwartz, of StudioEIS in Brooklyn, N.Y., who will speak about "Capturing History in Bronze: Inspiration and Process." The presentation will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Ford Motor Company Fund Education Center at the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park and is free and open to the public.

Schwartz’s presidential sculptures appear at Mount Vernon, Monticello, Montpelier and the Lincoln Cottage. StudioEIS artists are also well known as the creators of the figures in "Signers’ Hall" at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

A special "Back-to-School" community day will be held in early September. For information about Community Days, visit www.gettysburgfoundation.org .
