Gettysburg Events to Honor the Emancipation Proclamation

The weekend of September 21-23 will be set aside to honor the history of the Emancipation Proclamation. Activities take place throughout the weekend, including:

A special exhibit at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center from September 21 through September 28.Sponsored by the Gettysburg Foundation, Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.Admission fee is included with tickets to the Film, Cyclorama and museum exhibits.The exhibit features:

·Abraham Lincoln-signed Emancipation Proclamation

·Copy of Thirteenth Amendment signed by Congressmen and Senators who supported the legislation.

·Traveling Exhibit: "Abraham Lincoln: A Man for All Times"

·Traveling Exhibit: "Free at Last:A History of the Abolition of Slavery in America"

The Pennsylvania Civil War Road Show will be open to the public on September 21 through 23 on the campus of Gettysburg College.Free.

An Evening with Dr. James McPherson and Dr. Allen Guelzo at 8 pm, Friday, September 21 at the Majestic Theater.Free.Tickets are required and will be available at www.gettysburgmajestic.org

Free lecture:"Rebelling for the Promise of Revolution: Black Emancipation & the Civil War," by Dr. Scott Hancock.At 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.Confederates have long been called 'Rebels.'But the American Civil War witnessed the one of the largest rebellions of enslaved people in world history: 200,000 Black men taking up arms to make the Emancipation Proclamation a reality.This hour will propose a different way of thinking about the Civil War, and the kind of American Revolution that African Americans hoped it would create. Dr. Scott Hancock is Professor of History & Africana Studies at Gettysburg College.This event is sponsored by the Gettysburg Foundation and Gettysburg National Military Park.

The movie "Glory" 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, at the Majestic Theater.The free movie showing will include appearances by "Glory" extras and members of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Reenactment Unit.
