Get Into Gateway!
“Get into Gateway” is a weekend of free, fitness activities that showcase the park as a destination for healthy living. Gateway interns, staff, volunteers and partners will deliver healthy messages through a sampling of lively and fun fitness activities that promote healthy lifestyles.
 
GREAT KILLS PARK
Saturday, August 9th 2014
10 AM - 2 PM

Walk up Kayaking is just what it sounds like. The Rangers will demonstrate the proper way to set up your kayak and how to paddle correctly while they take you out in the bay.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to set up a camping site? There will be two sites; One at Canarsie Pier and one at Great Kills Park. The Rangers will demonstrate the do's and not to do's. Join them in this fun activity.

Your Park! Your Health! interns will present the 'Simple 7 Spin-Off' (a 'wheel of fortune' style game using the wheels of an upside-down bike on our table and '7 Simple Secrets' (a circle memory game using index cards).

Beach Volley Ball is a fun way to enjoy your time at the beach and help you to be more active. Rangers will give basic instructions and lead you in a game while demonstrating the proper form for serving.

"Shape-Up NYC" certified instructors will lead exercises on the pavilion at Great Kills Park. Mats will be provided. If you would like to use your own towel on the mat please remember to bring it. Sets of exercises will happen every hour. Learn how to correctly do that move before you get started and have fun.

The Girl Scouts of Greater New York will be at Get Into Gateway in Great Kills Park playing Fishing for Food game and mapping where your food comes from. Also, they will demonstrate how badges are done by the Girl Scouts. Learn how a healthy life style can be encouraged in fun ways.

ECOlife's Student Conservation Association Interns will show you sustainable living via the systems thinking process by demonstrating some fun activities they have done in their summer program for children. Info you can take home with you for your personal life.

Ever wonder what Seining is? This will be an opportunity to find out everything you ever wanted to know about seining and little fish!

An NPS Park Ranger, will take a group of bicyclers up to the Wildlife Refuge and back. Bring your own bike!

New York City Urban Rangers will have a table available with Hands on Fun!

SANDY HOOK
Sunday, August 10th 2014
9:30 AM - 2:30 PM

The Canoe Tour will meander to Skeleton Hill Island and learn about the natural history and cultural history of Sandy Hook. Call for reservations or you may not have a seat.*

Jeff Dement from the American Littoral Society will lead a group in a fishing workshop where all will learn the ins and outs of baiting the hook and catching a fish. Bait and equipment will be provided for the 13 people who reserve a spot.*

The Bike History Tour will lead a group of bikers around Ft. Hancock where they will view History House, the Lighthouse, Officer's Row, Sargent's Row and the barracks demonstrating the how life was lived around the fort.*

Children's Water Safety will be conducted by the Water Safety Interns and teach them the basics of being in and around water.
