Today, Gateway National Recreation Area will welcome its first overnight public campers at its new campground in the Horseshoe Cove area of Sandy Hook, N.J.

"National parks and overnight camping go hand in hand," said Superintendent Linda Canzanelli. "It's one of the best ways to experience the natural, recreational and historic treasures that Sandy Hook has to offer. If you've never seen the sun rise over Sandy Hook's oceanside beaches or the sunset over Horseshoe Cove, you really ought to try it."

The public will have access to eight camp sites on weekdays during the month of August, while the park continues to renovating the camping area. Up to twenty sites will be open on weekdays in September and October. Campers will be in close vicinity to all that Sandy Hook has to offer: bayside and ocean-side beaches, historic Fort Hancock and the Sandy Hook Lighthouse.

The new campground sites include picnic tables, fire pits, grills and restrooms. One tent site complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act for wheelchair accessibility. Park rangers with camping experience will assist visitors who may be new to camping.

For $20 a night, visitors can reserve up to four consecutive days at a campsite. Reservations must be made online at www.recreation.gov. Visitors can call 732-872-5906 with questions about the campsite, but not to make reservations. Overnight campers may not bring pets or alcohol to any overnight campgrounds at Gateway, including Sandy Hook.

Tent camping is now available at all three units of the park. Last year, the park increased the size of the campground at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn from four sites to 40. Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island opened seven campsites in July.
