Fighting Fire at Great Kills Park

The blaze burned 145 acres of the park.

Great Kills Park, part of the Staten Island Unit of Gateway NRA, caught fire on September 8, 2010. The fires burned grasslands and shrubs and threatened both park structures and neighborhoods bordering the park.

Fire Department New York (FDNY) came to the aid of National Park Service firefighters from five different parks in the Northeast Region: Acadia, Cape Cod, Delaware Water Gap, Statue of Liberty and Gateway, including personnel and equipment from the park's Sandy Hook Unit.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The blaze burned 145 acres of park property was contained within park boundaries by FDNY and NPS crews keeping nearby neighborhoods from burning as well as saving park structures. (NOTE: This map takes awhile to download. Please be patient.)
