NPS/Gateway NRA

In 1940, Fort Hancock's expansion began in prepartation for World War II.  National Guard soldiers, like these men of the 245th Coast Artilley, were federalized and temporary barracks and support building were constructed.

The personal stories of many generations of both everyday and important figures in history exist with in the park. From artillery soldiers, to famous aviators and military pilots, to lighthouse keepers and lifesavers, to civilian worker, wives, children and social activists these people lived and worked within what is now Gateway NRA.
