Camping at Ecology Village
Ecology Village aims to foster a sense of community and respect for the interdependence of all living things , and instill a stewardship ethic in an urban environment.
Built as a temporary mess hall and recreation space for sailors at the Floyd Bennett Field Naval Air Station in 1944, building 70 since 1977 has served to educate thousands of students about Jamaica Bay. Withstanding countless windstorms over the decades, in 2012 Hurricane Sandy severely damaged building 70's roof. During the spring of 2014 contractors will be installing a new roof and making other improvements. Therefore we will need to postpone spring camping and hope that groups interested in a ranger guided day program will schedule a trip with us to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. For groups who have their own camp equipment and are still interested in camping, the park's public campgrounds at Floyd Bennett Field are available for reservation. The park expects the work to be complete by mid-June, so at this time we do not expect our EcoLife day programs or our summer camping programs to be affected but we will provide an update on the summer in early April.
