Research

The preservation efforts undertaken by the Cultural Resources staff with Gates of the Arctic is firmly based in research efforts. Most of the major projects carried out over the years have had a strong research focus and many have been directly tied to academic collaborations such as graduate degree programs. Chert projectile point

Chert is a fine-grained rock used by the prehistoric inhabitants of the Brooks Range to create tools like scrapers, knives and spear points. The Brooks Range contains one of the richest deposits of "tool quality" chert in the world.
