In a time of growing urbanism with crowded conditions and little open space, William Bancroft, a wealthy Quaker businessman, advocated for planned development and parkland. In 1901, he created the Woodlawn Company, (today Woodlawn Trustees), to preserve open space for the benefit of the people.
