Richmond and Petersburg National Battlefields

Though Grant promised at Spotsylvania that he would fight it out on that line "if it takes all summer," he instead pressed south, pushing ever closer to Richmond. The Overland Campaign escalated in its exhausting tactics and bloodshed as it spiraled southward, and as spring lengthened into summer, the armies came to stare each other down in siege operations around Petersburg.

Follow in Grant and Lee's footsteps with the excellent events hosted by our partner parks: Richmond National Battlefield Park and Petersburg National Battlefield.
