Visitor Center

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Visitor Center is open daily except January 1, Thanksgiving, and December 25.   Hours of operation are:

October 16 through April 14 - 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

April 15 through October 15 - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Visitors to the center have the opportunity to view the park film along with other exhibits about the site.  Admission to the visitor center is free and reservations are not required.  Viewing of "Frederick Douglass: Fighter for Freedom", a 17-minute film on the life of Frederick Douglass is available at every half hour.  Seating is limited; tour companies should contact the site prior to visit at (202) 426-5961.

Peirce Mill Stone  

Did You Know?
There are three stands of millstones on Peirce Mill. Two of these stands are hard, granitic rock and used to process large grains such as corn. The third stand of millstones in Peirce Mill are called French Buhr stones and made it possible for the mill to produce a purer grade of flour.
