The National Capital Region (NCR), headquartered in Washington, DC, administers the National Mall and monumental core parks that were established at the same time the Nation's Capital was founded in the period 1790-1792. This oldest collection of national park areas, along with dozens of historic sites, natural areas, and Civil War battlefields comprise today's National Capital Region of the National Park Service.

Franklin Roosevelt, like three other presidents whose memorials grace the National Mall, commanded attention because of his stature. Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt all stood over six feet tall. Before he was confined to a wheelchair, FDR stood out in a crowd at 6’2” tall.
