Important places to look at during Fort Union Trading Posts' historic era and their tie to the fur trade.
This was the head quarters for the western department of the American Fur Company and the Upper Missouri Outfit
During the 1850s the buffalo robes became the main source of trade and eastern United States and Europe became a primary trade outlet for the robes.
The Assiniboine tribe supported the trade by bringing in the buffalo robes. Many of the traders knew their ties to the tribe ensured their ability to continue the trade with them.
- Confluence and surrounding areas
The jointing of the two rivers, the Yellowstone and Missouri was a place that many came to see, from the tribes in the area to Lewis and Clark and then until the military came the confluence continued to see its share of visitors. Also during the stay of prince Maximilian and Karl Bodmer in the 1830s the location of what is now commonly known as Bodmers overlook where Karl Bodmer painted Fort Union became a place to see where the artist did his rendition of Fort Union during its historical period.
