Cultural Encounters: 150th Civil War Anniversary 2012
Watrous, NM: Fort Union National Monument announces the annual Cultural Encounters, a free event on June 23 and 24, 2012 from 8am to 10:45pm on Saturday, and 8am to 4:15pm on Sunday.The event will emphasize the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War as it relates to New Mexico and Fort Union and will include speakers on topics such as military operations, impacts of the Civil War on Native Americans, effects of the "Indian Wars", civil rights and the expanding role of women on the frontier.
Visitors may walk amongst and learn from living History presenters including the Fort Davis Buffalo Soldiers, Artillery Company of New Mexico, Fort Larned military company and Fort Union's Company A of the 3rd New Mexico Volunteer Infantry. An exhibitors and children's tent area will highlight local historical, cultural, and recreational opportunities.
Saturday's events will include a special evening sunset fort tour followed by a stargazing astronomy program. Sunday will begin with an 8:15am ranger led 2 mile hike along the historic Santa Fe Trail which will focus on the natural environment of Fort Union and difficulties faced on the Santa Fe Trail. Visitors may also take self-guided tours of Fort Union. It is recommended that visitors wear sturdy walking shoes, a hat, and bring sun block, snacks and water. Food and beverage services will be available both days.
