Rome, NY: To celebrate Fort Stanwix National Monument’s 75th birthday the park will host a special Father and Son Encampment on June 12 and 13, 2010. This is one of a series of special events throughout the year.

Fathers and their sons will join park staff, volunteers and partners for this unique opportunity to become a Continental Soldier for a night and camp at Fort Stanwix. Together they will march, drill, stand guard duty, and enjoy an evening campfire program. Please remember that because you will be a soldier in the 18th century plan to share rooms with other families. Sons are defined as boys from the ages of 5 to 17.Due to available space, the program is limited to only 100 people; reservations will be on a first come, first serve basis. If less than 50 people make reservations the program will be cancelled.

Please call Fort Stanwix National Monument at (315) 338-7730 by Saturday, June 5th to make your reservation to participate in this event.

The cost for the encampment is $15.00 per person. The catered dinner and breakfast will be provided by The Savoy restaurant. The dinner includes stew, bread and non-carbonated soft drinks, and in the morning participants will enjoy a Continental breakfast. If you wish to supplement these meals with something more, like the Continental soldiers, you will need to provide this yourself. Please make checks payable to the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce and send the checks to the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce, 139 West Dominick Street, Rome, NY 13440-5809.

Because of the mold, mildew, dust, and straw inside the fort, people with severe allergies and asthma are cautioned to consider their participation in this event. Additionally, please bring your sleeping bags and pillows, and a blanket to lie over the straw beds.

Come out, enjoy and celebrate Fort Stanwix National Monument’s 75th birthday.
